Architecture for Climate and Landscape

—

The North Coast of New South Wales offers a particular way of living.

Warmth, rain, vegetation and long periods of outdoor life create opportunities for architecture that is porous, shaded and closely connected to landscape.

Rather than treating inside and outside as separate conditions, we are interested in the spaces between them—verandahs, breezeways, courtyards, covered terraces and protected openings that allow daily life to move naturally between shelter and landscape.

Designing for the North Coast

—

Our approach begins with climate.

Orientation, prevailing breezes, rainfall, solar protection, vegetation and topography become fundamental parts of the design rather than technical considerations added later.

From Byron Bay and Bellingen to Crescent Head, Seal Rocks and the landscapes between them, every site has its own character. Coastal exposure, hinterland vegetation, bushfire conditions and rural terrain require different responses.

We therefore avoid imposing a predetermined architectural language.

Instead, we seek to understand what already makes a place compelling and ask how architecture might intensify that experience.

Natural materials, carefully controlled light, landscape and passive environmental design can create homes that feel relaxed without being casual; refined without becoming precious.

Architecture becomes a framework through which the landscape can be more deeply experienced.
